 Clothing Exchanges
ICAP hosts a clothing exchange in several counties
within the service area. Agency staff and volunteers sort, display and disburse
donated clothing to lower-income persons and families.
Several of ICAP’s satellite offices also host a food
pantry, which supplies a three-day supply of food for eligible participants.
Canned fruits and vegetables, milk, meat and other edible items are provided.
Most other human services agencies refer potential applicants to the food pantry
in the area, thus maximizing effective use of these resources. In the counties
in which ICAP does not host the food pantry, staff make referrals to the local
pantry for eligible participants.
Each year eligible participants can receive a voucher,
which is used to purchase garden seeds and/or live plants. The participants then
plant a garden and harvest the produce as the year goes along. If funding
allows, the participants can also get canning or preserving supplies, as well,
so that they can save some of the produce for use in future months. The program
helps to assure that the participating households have access to fresh fruits
and vegetables, which helps them to maintain their nutritional well-being.
ICAP operates four thrift stores within the service area: the Nearly New Shop in Howard (Miner County), Aunt Sally’s Attic in Clear Lake (Deuel County), the Clark County Thrift Store in Clark, and The Closet in Flandreau (Moody County). Staff and volunteers collect, sort, clean and sell clothing and other household goods (e.g. blankets) to persons who wish to use the store’s services. If an income-eligible person or family cannot afford to purchase the clothing, the Community Service Worker in that county can provide a voucher that allows the person or family to get the clothing at no charge.
